This season, the NFL player protests of police brutality and racial injustice during the national anthem have been sporadic.

Players such as Miami’s Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson along with the Carolina Panthers’ Eric Reid have continued to take knees during the anthem but many have remained standing or in the locker room.

However, last week, a San Francisco 49ers cheerleader took a knee during the national anthem ahead of the team’s game against the Oakland Raiders. Kayla Morris, a second-year member of the 49ers’ Gold Rush cheer squad took the knee during the anthem and the pictures of her protest against police brutality quickly went viral.

On Monday night, prior to the Niners’ game against the New York Giants, Morris again took a knee. She and representatives from the 49ers declined to discuss why she protested.

Initially many were worried that she would be booted from the cheerleading squad over the protest but she still appears to be employed by the team.

Morris is the first NFL cheerleader to take a knee during the national anthem to, presumably, protest racial inequality and social injustice.
