Dozens of hip hop acts received recognition with nominations and several earned an industry-coveted BET Hip Hop awards during the 2020 virtual event.
Grammy-nominated artist Rapsody took home the award for Lyricist of the Year, presented to her by Atlanta-bred rapper T.I. While accepting the award, she revealed the honor is the first award win of her career.
“I’m glad it came from BET,” she remarked as she continued to uplift female rap. “Mama I got one for you.”
Pop Smoke won a posthumous award taking the Best New Hip Hop Artist title. The 20-year-old Brooklyn drill rapper was murdered in a California shooting earlier this year. theGrio previously reported that two men and two teenagers were charged with the crime, Corey Walker, 19, and Keandre Rodgers, 18. The men were each charged with murder with a special circumstance, and the pair each face one count of murder and robbery in juvenile court.
During Tuesday’s event, Master P accepted his award, gave a shoutout to the late Nipsey Hussle and guaranteed the marathon will continue.
