Hobart “Hobie” Young, a member of the Upper Township Committee in Cape May County, New Jersey, resigned from his role after posting vulgar, manipulated images of Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris on Facebook.
Young tendered his resignation within days of the posts, but then less than a week later he changed his mind.
The photoshopped images depict the California senator in sexually suggestive poses. One picture is a wide shot of the Oct. 7 vice presidential debate depicting Harris sitting with her legs open opposite Vice President Mike Pence.
Young, a Republican, backtracked his resignation by showing up on Monday night during a virtual meeting of the township committee, in which he said he had spoken with an attorney who told him that he did not have to quit.

“I did not send in a signed letter stating my resignation. I sent an email to Barb and told her that I was going to resign,” he said, referring to committee clerk Barbara Young, to whom he is not related.
During the virtual meeting, he told the committee he would see them in court.

At one point, during the same meeting session, Young did not realize his microphone was on, and he referred to his colleagues as “lying a**holes.”

In Jersey, members of township committees consist of three to five members, who are elected officials. After the election, the committee selects one of its members to serve as mayor and preside at meetings.
Each committee member serves on various boards and sub-committees, which gives them a particular sphere of influence.

Young has not publicly commented about why he shared the images, nor why he wants his position back.
Young’s change-of-heart may not matter, however: The township committee has reportedly continued on with the process of filling the seat from which he resigned.
