Jul. 24, 2024 – 02:50 – The debate continues on Capitol Hill over funding to prevent illegal border crossings. As the number of those crossing the southern border rises, visa overstays are just as alarming. In 2022, over 850,000 people overstayed their visas in the United States, which is a record high, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The focus on immigration has largely been on the border and building a wall, which advocates point out tends to prevent people of color from entering the U.S. However, the number of visa overstays is not necessarily people of color.
