A Milwaukee County Transit System bus driver is being hailed as a hero after his kind act of helping an elderly man maneuver across a local road went viral.

It’s Thaddaus Turner’s duty to transport people where they need to go as a bus driver for the Transit system, but on one particular day, the 28-year-old saw his passenger, a blind man, trying to cross a road that was under construction and stepped in to lend an extra helping hand.

Gene Hubbard, who is blind, had been taking the same bus route for the last 20 years, but the road now under construction proved to be difficult for Hubbard to navigate on his own.

“The route was barricaded, it was rough for me as a driver, I can only imagine how rough it was for him,” Turner told CNN.

“I knew I had the traffic behind me stopped, because it’s only one-way through there. My concern was getting him across from the opposite direction,” said Turner to a local news station.

Turner took matters into his own hands and emerged from his bus to help guide Turner safely—a heartfelt act that was captured in a pic by an onlooker. The person shared the photo with Turner’s superiors at the Milwaukee County Transit System. The bus company then shared the photo on their Facebook page and there it took flight, receiving hundreds of supportive messages for Turner’s public display of kindness.

“I just can’t say enough about all the bus drivers,” Hubbard told CNN affiliate WITI. “If I don’t have a regular locating point to start from, I may as well be in the middle of the ocean.”

Turner has been surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response.

“I was surprised when I saw it in the news,” he said. “I didn’t think I would be here right now over something that is second nature to me, and my colleagues.”
