MC Hammer hopes new search engine is 'too legit to quit'

MC Hammer said it 20 years ago, and is proving today that he is “too legit to quit.”

The legendary rapper, whose real name is Stanley Kirk Burrell, has created a lot of buzz after announcing plans to launch a new search engine called WireDoo.

The announcement was made this week at the O’Reilly Media’s Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.

The rapper promises his site can surpass the reigning search engine Google, with its “deep search” capabilities.

During his presentation Hammer admitted that the world might not need a new search engine, but with WireDoo users will be not just simply search for keywords, but also find information related to keywords.

For example, if someone searches for the name of a city, they would retrieve statistics related to that city, including real estate, data, crime rates, information on schools, and shopping data.

During the media summit the rapper referenced Google’s founder Sergie Brin, who was backstage.

“Why create another search engine? Well, what if Sergei and Larry had not tried?,” he said.

Hammer has been working on WireDoo for more than 2 years with his team and truly believes that the search engine could eventually be the go-to destination for information.

This is not Hammer’s first time trying his hand at launching a major website. In 2007 he unsuccessfully attempted to upstage YouTube by launching DanceJam.com as an internet site for sharing and viewing dance videos.

WireDoo is currently in closed beta, and only available to a small select audience for testing. The site is tentatively planned to launch around December 2011.
