RuPaul on campaign trail in New Hampshire: 'I am not Ron Paul'

Arguably the world’s most famous drag queen, RuPaul was in New Hampshire Saturday to make an announcement: he is not running for president. He visited the Red Arrow Diner in Manchester, a typical campaign stop during elections cycles, in the next primary battleground state.

“I’m going to New Hampshire on a mission to spread love and set the record straight: contrary to recent reports, I am not Ron Paul,” he said. “I am not running for president of the United States. I hope to meet Ron Paul in person so we can be seen together to put the rumors to rest once and for all.”

A vandalized Ron Paul yard sign, manipulated to spell “RuPaul,” may have inspired the mix-up. It went viral online. Shortly after, The New York Times ran a feature, “Caucus Quiz: Ron Paul or RuPaul” to test readers’ knowledge of the similarly named duo.

RuPaul said in a statement that he’s not a political person but, “Any time a man leaves the house in a wig and a pair of cha cha heels, he’s making a political statement. Let us not forget that this great nation was founded by a bunch of men wearing wigs.”
