Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) offered up a farm bill amendment in the Senate that would cut 45 percent of food stamp funding next year. Last night, Rev. Al Sharpton interviewed Catholic nun Sister Simone Campbell on Politics Nation about organizing a bus tour to draw attention to nuns’ work with the poor and protest of proposed aid cuts. A group of Roman Catholic nuns are planning a trip across nine states this month with stops in food pantries, schools and homeless shelters to highlight their work with the nation’s poor and disenfranchised.
The tour is a response to a critique in April by the Vatican’s doctrinal office that said nuns are too vocal on social issues, and not active enough when it comes to controversial social issues such as abortion and gay marriage.
The tour is also meant to protest cuts passed in the Republican budget authored by Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Ryan has cited his Catholic faith in the past to justify cuts.
