Did Nicki Minaj endorse Romney in new freestyle?

Nicki Minaj is generating some buzz for her contribution to Lil Wayne’s latest entry in his Dedication mixtapes series, Dedication 4.

On the fifth track, “Mercy,” Minaj raps: “I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney, you lazy b*tches is f**king up the economy.”

This technically isn’t Minaj’s first foray into presidential politics. This past June she surprised many of her fans by directly tweeting at President Barack Obama about health care reform.

“That should be a God given right! Even with Obama Care, too much involved. Just give FREE health care to all. @barackobama What can we do?” Minaj tweeted.

“@BarackObama I wouldn’t mind the millions they took if it was going to healthcare. Why should a poor person struggle to pay for MEDS sir?” she added.

Whether or not this latest line was a real endorsement of the GOP nominee has yet to be determined, but Minaj’s fans on social media have begun to speculate and debate.

theGrio: Will Nicki Minaj really join the 2012 campaign trail?

Brooklyn emcee Talib Kweli tweeted from this account that Nicki Minaj isn’t really endorsing Romney, but merely using this verse to generate publicity for her album.

However, if the line is meant to be interpreted literally it would likely be the most overt rejection of the president’s re-election from a prominent figure in hip-hop, a genre which has shown unprecedented support for Obama in the past.

Some have suggested that the Romney line could be interpreted as the thoughts of one of Minaj’s myriad of alternative personas, which she frequently adopts in her performances.

Whether this is an example of great marketing or not-so-subtle political support, who knew half a verse could generate so much debate?

Check out the verse in question at the 1:37 mark and let us know what you think below.
