CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — This year’s Democratic National Convention has attracted thousands to the ‘Queen City’ for three days of energetic speeches and pro-Obama excitement. The goal for the president’s supporters is simple: four more years. TheGrio’s Todd Johnson caught up with several local residents and others gathered in Charlotte for the convention to discuss expectations for a second Obama term.
“I’d like to see the people give him respect that he needs as a president,” said long-time Charlotte resident Aaron Orr. “He has been the least respected president I [have] ever seen.”
Alisa Williams, who traveled from Arlington, Virginia to attend the convention, was more specific.
“I am all for executive power and the power of the pen and I wish he had used his executive power more to get things done,” Williams said.
Williams also said she would like to see the president take a more “strategic approach” to eliminate joblessness. One of her suggestions was to involve the private sector more.
Charlotte resident Donald Davis explored the convention happenings on Tuesday with his son. He said he has high expectations for the president if he is awarded a second term but believes he will still be obstructed by Republicans.
“Soon as they untie his hands, he’ll do a lot more,” Davis said. “Until then, I don’t know [what he can do].”
