Mitt Romney surrogate John Sununu is dismissing former Secretary of State Colin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama over Mitt Romney as being all about race.
The former New Hamshire governor, who during the campaign has called the president “lazy,” following the first presidential debate, and said Obama needs to “learn how to be an American,” was asked by CNN’s Piers Morgan on Thursday to comment on the Powell endorsement, which was a repeat of the general’s stance in 2008, and whether it’s time for the four-star general to leave the Republican Party.
After praising “Powell’s former boss” George H.W. Bush for “endorsing Mitt Romney all along,” Sununu said:
“… frankly, when you take a look at Collin Powell, you have to wonder whether that’s an endorsement based on issues, or whether he’s got a slightly different reason for endorsing president Obama.”
Morgan asked what that reason might be, to which Sununu added: “Well, I think when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being President of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.” Morgan did not take the opportunity to follow up, and ended the interview there.
