During a fundraising and awards dinner with two other Republican former governors, Sununu stated: “They aggressively got out the base of their base, the base of their base that’s dependent, to a great extent economically, on government policy and government programs,” reports the Concord Monitor.
This post-election statement is eerily similar to Mitt Romney’s statement before the election about the “47 percent.”
Romney was unknowingly recorded stating that “there are 47 percent who are with [Obama], who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them.”
He continued: “I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”
Along with Sununu, former governors Steve Merrill and Craig Benson also spoke. Agreeing with everything Sununu said, Merrill added Obama’s re-election was not due to his performance, but rather “his personality, particularly in campaign mode.”
He believes that because of the government, some people don’t feel the “need to go out and make their own future,” or they feel that they can not make it on their own.
“What the Democratic Party does is, it takes people’s dreams away, period,” concluded Benson.
