Kentucky man: Obama effigy includes watermelon because he 'might get hungry'

An anti-Obama Kentucky man remains defiant in the face of criticism that his effigy of the president eating a watermelon is racist and offensive.

“The way I look at it, it’s freedom of speech,” said Casey County’s Danny Hafley said in an interview with Lex 18.

Hafley calls his display, which is on his front yard, “popular,” and when pressed about why a watermelon is included in the scene, he quipped that the fake Obama, “might get hungry standing out here.”

During the election season there was a rash of racially insensitive Obama effigies popping up all over the country.

More often than not, the first African-American president has been portraying hanging from a noose, in an unsubtle nod to this country’s legacy of lynching.
