WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will meet Thursday with relatives of the victims of the Connecticut school shooting.
Friday marks six months since the shooting that killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
The shooting sparked new calls for Congress to limit access to guns. Some of the victims’ families are in Washington this week lobbying lawmakers for action.
Obama spokesman Jay Carney says the White House commends the families’ courage and determination to push for legislation to reduce gun violence. Legislation to expand background checks for gun buyers failed in the Senate in April.
Biden plans to hold a gun control event at the White House on Tuesday.
