Obama invokes Kim and Kanye while discussing American culture

In an unusual interview at Amazon headquarters for its “Kindle Singles” program this week, President Barack Obama was asked if he ever longed for things when he was a kid that “that you couldn’t afford?”

“I think every kid has some fantasies about what they’d like to have,” he said.

But he added, speaking of his people from his generation, “Partly, I think there also has been a shift in culture. We weren’t exposed to the things we didn’t have in the same way that kids today are. There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Kids weren’t monitoring what Kim Kardashian was wearing or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success.”

Ironically, a new version of the popular 1980s series Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, hosted by Nick Cannon, is set to debut soon.
