First family attends church service in Washington, DC

President Obama, the first lady and their two daughters Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12, walked hand in hand as they attended a church service Sunday morning at St. Johns Episcopal in Washington, DC.

The pastor, Dr. Luis Leon, delivered the sermon and discussed the need to be humble before God, especially for those who undergo a self-righteous search for piety.

According to an NBC source, he also made one political observation, saying: “We are prone to judge other nations by their actions but we want to be judged by our own ideals, not by our actions.”

Leon famously delivered the benediction at President Obama’s second inauguration.

“Jesus’ point is clear: Mercy can’t come to those who think themselves flawless. God simply can’t reach the self-sufficient,” Dr. Leon said.

The first family participated in communion with President Obama kneeling alongside Malia as Mrs. Obama knelt with Sasha.
