When Tuffy Gessling dressed up as President Obama to act as a ‘rodeo clown’ at the Missouri State Fair he drew nationwide criticism and rebukes, but he is apparently something of a hero in his hometown of Sedalia, Missouri.
According to Politico, Gessling leads a local content to be named “Person of the Year” by a substantial margin.
The competition was created by radio host Rob Edwards. “I think that’s another reason why he’s doing so well, he actually has a lot of fans, believe it or not,” Edwards told the local CBS affiliate KMOX.
After Gessling was banned from the Missouri State Fair following the Obama stunt he became something of a folk hero for the right wing. In August, Texas congressman Steve Stockman personally invited him to perform in his state.
For his part, Gessling, who claims the entire rodeo clown performance wasn’t meant to be serious, says he’s received death threats and would be “honored to shake” the president’s hand.
