NY police unions seek stop-and-frisk appeals ruling

NEW YORK (AP) — Police unions want the courts to decide whether a judge legally ordered changes to the New York Police Department’s stop and frisk program.

They say that aspect should still be examined if the city drops its appeal.

Unions for police officers and their superiors filed federal appeals court papers Friday in Manhattan. They say that a judge insulted police officers last summer when she ruled that the tactic was carried out in a discriminatory manner.

Last month, the new administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh) asked the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to let it withdraw its appeal of the judge’s ruling in hopes of reaching a settlement. The appeals court has not yet ruled on the request.
