Child killed in New York elevator stabbing is NBA forward's cousin

A man attacked two children in a Brooklyn elevator Sunday, stabbing both and killing one.

Police said a six-year-old boy died and a seven-year-old girl is currently in critical condition, reports NBC New York.

Both children were stabbed in their torsos around 6 p.m. in East New York.

The boy, identified by police as Prince Joshua Avitto, was set to celebrate his seventh birthday June 17.

“No parent should have to go through this,” his mother said, according to NBC. “He killed my baby.”

The boy is the cousin of Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson, reports NBC Chicago.

Gibson expressed his feelings via Twitter and Instagram:

Police believe the suspect they are looking for could be the same person who stabbed 18-year-old Tanaya Grant-Copeland to death just blocks away on Friday night.

The boy’s father, Nicholas Avitto, told the New York Post he recognized the individual in the police sketch as a homeless man he’d seen in the building before.

No arrests have been made.
