U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will announce he is stepping down Thursday, according to multiple reports.
Holder, the country’s first black attorney general, will “stay on the job until a successor is confirmed,” a Justice Department official told NBC News’ Pete Williams.
NPR’s Carrie Johnson, who first reported the news, has more:
A former U.S. government official says Holder has been increasingly “adamant” about his desire to leave soon for fear he otherwise could be locked in to stay for much of the rest of President Obama’s second term.
In February, Holder told Jeffrey Toobin he would leave office “this year,” in an article published in the New Yorker.
