Jamaica moves to ditch the Queen of England as head of State

Last year, Jamaica decriminalized marijuana, and this year, they’re taking another step forward and making it completely legal. However, what’s more important is the proposed move to ditch the Queen of England.

In a speech by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen posted to the government’s website, the proposed changes were announced, with replacing the Queen high on the list.

Jamaica currently operates with the Queen of England as its head of state. The Queen appoints a representative to be the country’s governor general, instead of holding an election. However, Jamaica plans to change its constitution to have a non-executive president as its head of state, making Jamaica a republic and in the process getting rid of the position of governor general.

The Jamaica Observer writes, “A non-executive president, like the governor general, would still be a symbolic leader and perform a representative and civic role but with no powers to make policy.”
