On Sunday, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer surprised the nation when he appeared at the 2017 Emmys, complete with his signature podium, to poke fun at the crowd size.
“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period, both in-person and around the world,” Spicer said after being introduced by host Stephen Colbert.
It was a call-back to his first ever press conference, when he came out defending President Donald Trump’s false claims about the size of his inauguration crowd, and in an interview with the New York Times, he admitted that he regretted that decision.

“Of course I do, absolutely,” Spicer said when asked if he regretted it.
Spicer added that he had not told anyone in the White House, not even the president, about his plans to appear at the Emmys. However, he said that it was not his intention to lambast the president. He explained that the joke was instead “an attempt to poke a little fun at myself and add a little bit of levity to the event.”
While it was obvious from the reactions caught on camera that Spicer’s entrance to the Emmys caught everyone off guard, the responses were mixed, with some celebrating Spicer’s apparent turn against his old boss and others insisting that he should not be absolved of his complicity in the Trump administration’s war on the press.
