Meghan Markle will indeed become a princess when she exchanges her marriage vows with Prince Harry later this year, but she won’t be Princess Meghan.

According to royal expert Alastair Bruce, when Markle receives her princess title on her wedding day it won’t include her actual government name. Instead, she will then be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Harry of Wales.

There is simply no chance that she will be Princess Meghan.

“She will never ever be Her Royal Highness Princess Meghan. That will never happen,” he told InStyle. “She will become Her Royal Highness Princess Harry of Wales, because we don’t give the brides titles in their own right. It’s a tradition in Britain. There’s a reason, but it’s very boring.”

Duchess, perhaps?

Markle might not get to be called Princess Meghan but she might get to be made a duchess. However, we will have to wait until her wedding day to find that out.

“It’s highly likely, but you cannot guarantee these things because the queen is the fountain of all honors; the sovereign is the fountain of all honor,” Bruce says.

“If the queen wishes it, she may make her grandson a duke on the morning of the wedding, and if that is done, then it will be announced probably about 8 or 10 a.m., and then of course, at the moment of marriage, she will become the duchess of wherever that is: Her Royal Highness the Duchess of wherever that is,” Bruce explained. “We’ll have to see what the Queen decides to do.”

If you were paying attention when Prince William and Kate Middleton got married, you might recall that is how it played out for them.

It should also be noted that just like Markle will not be Princess Meghan, Middleton isn’t Princess Kate, she is Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales.
