Atlanta gay bar owner causes outrage with Facebook posts

The owner of Atlanta’s Burkhart’s Pub is under fire for racist Facebook posts.

Palmer Marsh, who has owned the gay bar for decades, has been busted using a racial slur about former President Barack Obama. A screenshot of the post has gone viral. The message has since been deleted from his Facebook profile.

There are other controversial posts that are still able to be seen. The posts, from 2015 read, “If the South had won, we would be a hell of a lot better off.”

One of the others says, “My Confederate money that I inherited is on my kitchen counter. RIGHT NOW! Steal the money, if you like, but don’t try to take my flag because you might get seriously injured by doing so.”

One of his posts from this month made reference to “under-the-radar-racists,” among other ramblings, got many angry messages left in response. It too has been either hidden from public view or deleted.

The public was tipped off to these posts when a former employee who does not want to be identified, was sent to the online magazine Wussy.

The public backlash is sure to cause problems for Burkhart’s Pub, but the general manager Don Hunnewell, gave a statement to Georgia Voice saying that Marsh is retired and “has had no active participation in the operations” of the bar since Hunnewell took over. He did not specify when that was.

Hunnewell was also upset when he saw the posts, saying it took all he had in him “to soldier on and not terminate my employment agreement.” He did say, however, that he would be looking for new employment opportunities when the employees’ lives have been “stabilized.”

While many people are asking for an outright boycott of the business, there are others who don’t want to see the bar employees suffer and lose their jobs.

For years, Burkhart’s Pub has been the gay bar where the community would come together in times of joy and sadness. After the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, hundreds of people gathered at Burkhart’s Pub and had a vigil there.
