If you watched the Grammys last night, you may have noticed that although many women had been nominated for awards, only one took home a solo award in a major category (Alessia Cara for Best New Artist).

The Recording Academy’s President Neil Portnow responded to questions about this by stating:

“It has to begin with…women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level.”

Portnow said women “need to step up” because “they would be welcome.”

While some would say the answer goes beyond just women desiring to be recognized, we decided to recognize black women who shined at the Grammys 2018, beyond just looking good on the red carpet.
