Last month, ProPublica released audio of immigrant children who had been separated from their parents crying and screaming at a detention center near the U.S./Mexico border. One child in particular, six-year-old Alison Jimena Valencia Madrid, captivated the attention of the country due to her intelligence and earnest pleas. In Spanish, she begged to speak to her aunt and even provided a phone number to the customs agent.

Little Alison has now been reunited with her mother after spending over a month away from her. Mother and daughter were reunited at an airport in Houston.

Cameras captured the moving moment. Alison can be seen smiling and holding hands with her mother. They get into the backseat of a van and Alison sits on her mother’s lap, waving to the cameras.

Trump’s ‘Zero Tolerance’ Immigration Policy

Trump has separated nearly 3,000 children from their parents with his “zero tolerance” immigration policy. The children have been taken to various facilities all over the country, some kids were transported hundreds of miles away from where they were last with their parents.

After public outcry, Trump reversed course and slowly began the process of reuniting families that his policies separated in the first place. U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw gave the government a 14-day deadline to reunite children under 5 with their parents and a 30-day deadline for older children.

The Trump administration did not meet the 14-day deadline for children under five. About half of those children were actually reunited with the parents by the deadline. The older children’s deadline is July 26.
