Netflix has acquired the rights to Flying Bird and we can’t wait for it to hit the streaming service next year.

The film features an all-star cast that includes André Holland (Moonlight, The Knick), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Atlanta), Melvin Gregg (UnREAL), Sonja Sohn (The Chi), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek: Beyond), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), and Bill Duke (Predator).

The plot is centered on a rookie basketball player navigating his career during turbulent times.

During a pro basketball lockout, a sports agent pitches a rookie basketball client on an intriguing and controversial business proposition.

Flying Bird comes from the Oscar-winning director of Unsane and Magic Mike, Steven Soderbergh.

“We had several strong options for distributing HIGH FLYING BIRD, but to borrow the patois of the movie itself, this deal felt like a slam dunk and the perfect way for me to begin my relationship with Netflix as a director,” he said in a statement.

Flying Bird is written by Academy Award-winning writer of MoonlightAlvin McCraney and is produced by Joseph Malloch (Unsane).

We can’t wait to see Zazie Beetz in her next big role and the actress continues to be a role model for folks struggling with depression and anxiety.

It seems that Zazie Beetz is not as impressed with her rise to stardom as some folks expect her to be, but that may be a good thing since she has put major effort into learning how to cope wither anxiety issues.

“It’s a big part of who I am, and a couple of years ago I had an experience with it that changed my life to this day and I had to really kind of rearrange how I thought about my management of that, and what that means for my day-to-day in terms of what I eat, in terms of exercising, having a breathing practice and engaging in meditation practices. For me it also flows a little bit into insecurity with my work, and I think that’s just something that over time, will hopefully—I’m sure it’ll never completely go away, but to where it doesn’t overwhelm me, and kind of take over my emotions,” she said in April.

Depression and anxiety are real, and don’t evade fortunate people. You can still have good fortune and deal with that in terms of what goes on in your life. Everything might circumstantially be good: I’m in a healthy relationship, I have a loving family, I’m doing well in my career. But when I go home at night I still struggle with this, I still have good days and bad days. I have to tell my boyfriend, OK, I’m having anxiety today and we’ll need to work through that together.”

Netflix will release the film globally in 2019.
