Barely 15 minutes into the 91st Annual Academy Awards, actress Regina King snagged her first Oscar, and the best part is- it was also her first time ever being nominated. The veteran actress took home the award for Best Supporting Actress for the 2018 film, If Beale Street Could Talk.
During her acceptance speech, the 48-year-old megastar was sure to thank everyone from God to her “sisters in art,” as she tearfully gave thanks for her win:
“To be standing here, representing one of the greatest artist’s of our time, James Baldwin, it’s a little surreal. James Baldwin birthed this baby, and Barry [Jenkins], you nurtured her and you surrounded her with so much love and support. So it’s appropriate for me to be standing here because I’m an example of what it looks like when supporting love is poured into someone,” King said.
The Hollywood star then turned to her mother and date for the evening, Gloria King, and thanked her for her ongoing support throughout the years.
“Mom, I love you so much. Thank you for teaching me that God is always leaning and has always been leaning in my direction.”
The stunning starlet topped off her list of “Thank you’s,” by showing appreciation to her fellow women in Hollywood, and of course, the man above.
“My sisters in art… it’s been an honor to have my name be just said with yours this whole step of the way. God is good- all the time! “
Regina King becomes only the second person ever to snag an Oscar win after having never been nominated for a SAG or BAFTA award, prior.
The actress has also won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for the same role, as well as her whopping three Emmys for her roles in American Crime and Seven Seconds.
Congrats to Regina King!
