According to the report, police had issued summonses to five protesters and released them from custody. Three additional protesters were issued desk appearance tickets and released from police custody.

Fox5 reported New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said he will not let up and police will continue to operate in the streets as election day nears. The outlet found some businesses are boarding up windows and considering closing outdoor dining in case of civil unrest following election results. Shea said the NYPD has reached out to local businesses in preparation for potential protests.

“We’ve gotten some questions regarding outdoor furniture and things and we actually, especially in Midtown, did make some requests to some BIDS in areas to clear the sidewalks and the reason for that was is that it’s impeding pedestrian traffic if we expect large protests,” Shea said according to Fox5.

One of those arrested was Hawk Newsome, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter New York organization. An NYPD spokesman confirmed he was taken in near West 24th Street and 10th Avenue.

The multimedia journalist behind the Twitter account @ScooterCasterNY uploaded footage of Newsome’s arrest to the social media outlet.

According to TMZ, he was arrested for misdemeanor obstructing governmental administration, plus two counts of disorderly conduct. The outlet reported police ordered Newsome and other demonstrators to leave from the area and stop blocking traffic which resulted in conflict. The ordeal allegedly got physical between police and protesters. TMZ reported he was given a desk appearance ticket and released.
