In an interview today with the Huffington Post, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore shared his thoughts on how much he thinks race has played a role in this year’s election.
“It’s not to say that all Republicans are racists or people who voted for Romney are racists,” Moore said on the website’s live-streaming network HuffPost Live.
“I don’t believe that, but I do believe that hate is a huge motivator on Romney’s side. And they have manipulated that and exploited it as best they can to try to get people out to get rid of Barack Obama.”
Moore also talked about efforts from the Republican Party to suppress minority groups’ votes. He said while voter suppression is nothing new, it takes the form of “hundreds of thousands of people at the polls” today.
He also said the organizations behind the suppression are trying to “stop as many people that look like they’re going to vote for Obama as possible.”
When asked if he was referencing people of color, Moore answered, “That was a polite way of saying that there’s a group of racists standing at the polling booths.”
