The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has opened a case into Officer James Hunt after being caught on cell phone video reportedly saying: “I kill mother—-ers,” as a man behind the camera questions him about making the callous comments.

According to Fox 32, a police department spokesperson said in a statement: “This kind of behavior is not what is expected of Department members and is in contrast to the hard work we have done and continue to do to rebuild trust with the communities we serve.”

COPA investigation will examine Hunt’s actions as well as the arrests to see if bogus charges were brought against the accused. The person recording the cell phone video claimed that Hunt tried to hit him with his vehicle.

Dumarcus Wright, 20, was arrested for simple assault and battery; and Kenneth Lee, 21, was arrested for aggravated assault to a peace officer; and a 15-year old boy was arrested for aggravated assault to a peace officer, aggravated battery of a peace officer, and a traffic citation for obstruction of traffic, according to reports.

Hunt was sitting in an unmarked vehicle and as he went back and forth with the man, Hunt said that he could arrest him since he was “walking in the street… illegally.”

Hunt also demanded that the man stop recording the video and incorrectly quoted an Illinois law saying that he was violating the law by recording. However, Illinois law does allow for civilians to record officers during the course of performing their normal duties.

Hunt also can be heard calling one of the men a “retard”.

COPA said they are in the early stages of the investigation.
