An 11-year-old white girl from Suitland, Maryland is facing first-degree child abuse for allegedly assaulting a 1-year-old boy, causing him to sustain and eventually succumb to several brutal injuries.

According to CNN, the girl was watching Paxton Davis in her home last Sunday morning, while her mother ran a brief errand. The baby’s mother and family were friends of the girl’s family and thus did not have a problem letter her babysit. However in Maryland, children have to be at least 13 years old to watch another child.

Authorities arrested the girl after Paxton died Thursday from multiple injuries to his upper body while he was under her care, Prince George’s County police said.

“When hospital staff took a look at our 1-year-old victim, they immediately called child abuse detectives due to the severity of his injuries,” Prince George’s County Police Maj. Brian Reilly said at a news conference on Friday reported CNN. “It was clear from the beginning that the injuries Paxton suffered were not consistent with the normal play of a 1-year-old.”

Reilly said Paxton was in the “sole caring custody” of the 11-year-old girl when he was assaulted. Police decline to say whether the girl’s mother will also face charges.

“We are still looking at a lot of different things,” Reilly said. “I can’t say yes. I can’t say no.”

Reilly said the motive for the attack is unclear, and he declined to provide additional details on the extent of Paxton’s injuries.

“I don’t know what motive there would be in a situation like this for an 11-year-old to intentionally inflict injuries on a 1-year-old,” Reilly said, adding “… There are no words. There is no reason for this to take place.”

The girl is being held at a juvenile facility.

Paxton had reportedly spent time at the house before, according to police.

“It was an innocent friendly agreement that turned absolutely tragic,” Reilly said.
