Black man shot and killed by white suspect after dispute over parking

A Black man who argued with another man in the parking lot of a Trussville Alabama Cracker Barrel was shot to death, AL.com.

On Thursday, Randy Young, 40, reportedly had a confrontation with a white man over a parking issue. Young’s car was reportedly blocked in by two men and “An argument ensued, and it escalated to the point that the victim was shot by one of the suspects,’’ Trussville Police chief Eric Rush said.

Young was rushed to UAB Hospital and pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a spokesman for his family. He succumbed to his injuries from a fatal shot to the head.

On Friday, Bryan Patrick Hancock, 22, was charged Friday with attempted murder.

Young’s brother Brandon explained that he was at the restaurant with his stepfather when his car was blocked in by another and couldn’t exit.

The driver of the car that blocked Young’s car in. His stepfather was outside at the time. The driver of the car got out and went into the restaurant as Hancock sat in the vehicle and waited.

Young came out of the restaurant to find his car blocked and Hancock allegedly called him a racial slur.

From there the situation escalated and Young was shot and killed.

The suspect’s stepfather tried to defend him saying the situation had nothing to do with race.

“It’s absolutely not that,’’ said Steven Chatman. “I’ve been his father since he was 8 years old and he’s not a racist. There’s nothing about him that is racist.”

The suspect’s stepfather is Black. Hancock is white.

“He would not disrespect me like that,’’ he said. “I would say he grew up around 60 percent black people and 40 percent white people.”

“I truly sympathize with his (Randy Young) family. No one wants to have a death in their family,’’ he said. “I know him. He was my neighbor 20 years ago,” Chatman said.

Chatman tried to reason saying Hancock was defending himself.

“But this was completely a self-defense situation and the truth will come out,’’ he said. “Anybody who knows Bryan knows he has never been violent. Everybody is in shock behind this.”

“I think once the DA and judge get to see the actual evidence, they will know that it was not a racial incident and my son was acting in self-defense,’’ he said. “The truth will come. I stand behind my son 100 percent. I’m not going to have his name ruined behind something like this.“

Hancock is in the Jefferson County Jail on $150,000 bond. Police officials plan to upgrade the charges to murder.
