Say Cheese: Why everyday racists caught on camera are finally feeling the consequences of their BS

If you’re a racist jackwagon and you feel the need to let people know you’re a racist jackwagon in the most public way possible, life is coming at you fast these days. Just ask Aaron Schlossberg.

Dude dug down deep and channeled his inner Archie Bunker to shout down Spanish-speaking workers at a kitchen in Midtown Manhattan of all places, simply for not speaking his language. He even threatened to call U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on them because he assumed they were undocumented immigrants.

No one outside of other bigots appreciates seeing an entitled douche nozzle on tape berating honest, hard-working people, regardless of where they’re from. So the Internet, in true Internet fashion, made sure that Schlossberg had the worst Thursday, May 17, 2018 ever: His solo law practice got rocked with 1-star Yelp reviews, he was captured running from cameras like the pansy-ass that he is, local politicians have filed grievances against him and he was booted from his office space.

Oh and let’s not forget the mariachi band that played outside of his home the other day.

Another video of Scholossberg being eminently punchable two years ago also surfaced. Like, shit keeps happening to him as I write this. I’m sure he woke up this morning, looked at his checking account on his bank app and wondered if it was all worth it.

Schlossberg is essentially this week’s version of the woman online sleuths have identified as Jennifer Schulte, who last week became what might be the best meme this year to date when her low-budget Rosie O’Donnell-looking ass sucked through a few taxpayer dollars by calling the police on Black folks minding their legal, black-ass business having a barbecue in Oakland, CA. Schulte’s Linkedin page has gone bye-bye and her alma mater, Stanford University, has distanced themselves from her.

But wait, there’s more

But wait, there’s more

The bullshit doesn’t stop there: a Canadian snowflake apparently lost her gig for getting brolic with a Middle Eastern man at a restaurant, telling him to “go back to your f—ing country.” There’s also Alex Wolpert, a Sacramento Marine vet who cussed an elderly Laotian man out (and has since apologized) for wearing a camouflage shirt…as if something civilian teenagers have worn for decades is a sign of disrespect for the friends Wolpert lost.

I’m still waiting for the identity of the guy who got nasty with a Muslim woman wearing a Niqab in a California coffee shop (ahem, not Starbucks), asking her “Is this Halloween?” only for her to clap back. (It vexes me to think that the reason he’s gotten away relatively unscathed is because lots of people feel the same damn way.)

It’s worth noting that every single aforementioned incident happened within the last week and a half

I don’t think this relative deluge of videos of Whites Being Intolerant™ is a coincidence. Twenty-seven years after a guy with a video camera that’s likely heavier than your laptop, captured the Los Angeles Police Department wailing on Rodney King – and 26 years after the fallout from those officers’ acquittals caused the city to burn – your average 7-year-old is walking around with a device in their pockets that can capture much cleaner and clearer video.

It’s also a time in which a mess of internet users, anonymous and otherwise, are cracking their knuckles and ready to rain unholy hell from behind the comfort of their screens on someone acting up.

A #MeToo movement for everyday racism

Everyone has their own prejudices and we all know racist shit regularly occurs even more often than TNT airs The Shawshank Redemption. But it affects people on a visceral level to see videos of white people decked out in their most sensible Target attire spewing pure hate as the veins pop on their necks and foreheads. Seeing it removes any question about an incident’s veracity and makes people want to fight.

Journalist Jon Ronson wrote a good book on the topic, 2015’s So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed. He interviews some of Twitter’s earliest dragging victims, including Justine Sacco, whose life was turned on its ass-end by a stupid “joke” she posted on Twitter in 2013 that actually seems tame compared to what’s going in these days.

Sacco spent a lot of time trying to pick up the pieces of her deeply hindered life and career.  Recently, she was rehired with the company that canned her in the first place. But I’m guessing those aren’t results that most folks who will be forever memorialized on the internet spewing virulence on video should expect.

My guess is we’re going to see more racists getting their comeuppance as the anti-Trump “resistance” serves as a natural counterpoint to people who feel more emboldened in their racism by the president. Folks feel powerless watching the daily circus in the White House, and they want to use what juice they have to create far-reaching consequences for the people stupid enough to get caught on camera.

Consider it the equivalent of the #MeToo movement for racist f—boys and f—girls. We’re all just waiting for the next dumbass to get out of line in a crowded public venue. Say cheese.

Dustin J. Seibert is a native Detroiter living in Chicago. Miraculously, people have paid him to be aggressively light-skinned via a computer keyboard for nearly two decades. He loves his own mama slightly more than he loves music and exercises every day only so his French fry intake doesn’t catch up to him. Find him at his own site, wafflecolored.com.
